The painting depicts horses coming into the start of a steeplechase at Cheltenham. Cheltenham is regarded as the home of National Hunt Racing and is famous throughout the world for its Festival held in the middle of March each year, as the National Hunt Season draws towards its crescendo. Some of the same colours and horses can be seen in the painting entitled "In The Saddling Paddock, March Meet, Cheltenham". Both of these paintings capture beautifully the spirit of National Hunt Racing, the panoramic strength of the surroundings at Cheltenham and, in both cases, a sense of anticipation that an event, in which participation has been planned often for months, is now about to become reality and in the next few minutes a champion will emerge from all the runners.
